Het mobiele fablab, de Fablab Truck, stond met een eerste try out op het Fusion Festival in Duitsland.

Een impressie:
“Veel festival-bezoekers hadden nog nooit van het concept “Fab Lab” gehoord. Omdat we zelf ontworpen t-shirts buiten hadden hangen, dachten ze dat ze bij ons shirts met het Fusion logo konden kopen. Vaak reageerden ze eerst wat teleurgesteld, als ze te horen kregen dat ze ze dan wel even zelf moesten ontwerpen en printen, maar een grote groep mensen ging daarna toch aan de slag en werd steeds enthousiaster. Onvoorstelbaar hoeveel varianten er mogelijk zijn op het Fusion logo!

Andere bezoekers liepen langs, zagen een lasersnijder aan het werk en kwamen meteen met een waslijst aan dingen die ze graag wilden snijden. Zo heeft een lokale volkskeuken niet alleen haar logo en naam, maar ook de menukaart laser-gesneden, zodat ze die met een spuitbus op de muur konden zetten. Ook waren er veel shirt-ontwerpers en graffiti-artiesten, die meteen het nut van de lasersnijder inzagen.”

As described earlier there was a large FabLab presence at the SHiFT conference in Lisbon last week. Part of that was a documentary about FabLab. This 14 minute film was made by Elmine Wijnia, based on 2 days of filming in 2 FabLabs, and doing interviews with both visitors and staff of the labs.

The documentary was shown twice during the SHiFT conference, once as part of the FabLab workshop, and once as the official premiere in the main room. Now that it has been also shown to the FabLab community at the FabTable today, it is time to reveal it to the wider world.

It’s a documentary, not a clip, so do take the 14 minutes of time to watch it all. Enjoy.

Last week the SHiFT conference took place in Portugal. FabLab and personal production were a large part of the program, as you can read in a previous posting.

My talk ‘Maker Households’ was the closing key-note of the SHiFT conference last Saturday. This posting gives you the slides (with text) and the video of my talk (made by Siert Wijnia with his iPhone. Thanks!). The video starts about a minute after the beginning of my presentation.

This is the text that goes before the start of the video: I am here today to do two things: Pedro and his team asked me to try and bring everything that happened in the past 2 days together under one notion: ‘Maker Households’. And the second thing I want to do is to talk to you about how we can start looking at DIY not just as a skill or skillset, but also as a literacy. So we can live in these what I call ‘Maker Households’.

So let’s start with the detour leading up to this story that I created over the past two days. And the detour starts with something you are probably familiar with. In the past 15 yrs we mainstreamed 2 new infrastructures and connected people in the furthest regions of our globe to it: Internet, and mobile communications. These infrastructures are unique compared to any other infrastructure that went before. First of all. Conventional infrastructures basically always connect two geographic locations. This week the SHiFT Conference will take place in Lisbon. The third edition of this conference, looking at the societal impact of technology, has DIY – Do It Yourself as a theme. That is of course a fitting place to discuss FabLab as well!

FabLab Netherlands will be well represented at the conference. Protospace’s Siert Wijnia and RepRap-Yoda Erik de Bruijn, will do a talk and a 3 hour workshop on personal production with a RepRap as well as (hopefully) a laser cutter.

Elmine Wijnia has been busy interviewing and filming us these past months for her short documentary film about the Dutch FabLabs. The english version of the final result will be premiered at the SHiFT conference. She will also give a talk on the meaning of DIY in our digital and networked age. (The Dutch version of the documentary will be screened the first time at next week’s FabTable.) She also made two virals for the conference. One of them even ran as a TV-ad on Portuguese national television. The other is set in a FabLab. After next week’s FabTable both versions will be available in the FabLab video channel hosted with our friends from 23Video.com.

As last speaker of the conference Ton Zijlstra has the job of trying to tie everything discussed at the SHiFT conference together in an overarching narrative. His talk ‘Maker Households’ will discuss the opportunities full digitization bring for local resilience in the context of a resource-limited and fully networked world. Read the proposal in my blog.

Komend weekend wordt de RepRap weer goed vertegenwoordigd. Ditmaal op FOSDEM 2010 in Brussel. Zondag om 10 uur ’s ochtends is er een Main track talk gehouden door Adrian Bowyer. Verder zijn zaterdag en zondag RepRaps en Makerbots te zien in verschillende uitvoeringen.

January 27th is the date for the first FabTable in 2010. You are all invited to join us at CabFabLab in the Hague from 15:00.

We will be welcoming everybody to what surely will be a new fabulous fabrication year. A year that brings the Fab6 Conference to our shores in August (16th-20th). A year that also starts with a first in the global FabLab network: we will print the first ever FabYearBook.

The FabYearBook 2010 is a collection of stories and impressions from around the FabLab network. This first edition contains material from the Netherlands mostly, but we hope it will start a tradition, and that the 2nd edition in January 2011 will see contributions from around the globe.

At the FabTable we will print the first FabYearBook live in the CabFabLab. Afterwards we will publish the entire FabYearBook on-line for everybody to download and print as they like.

A sparkling 2010, starting at the CabFabLab

Op 27 januari vindt de eerste FabTafel van 2010 plaats. Iedereen is van harte uitgenodigd in het CabFabLab in Den Haag vanaf 15:00 uur.

Met elkaar luiden we een nieuw jaar in. Een jaar dat belooft bijzonder te worden. In augustus (16 t/m 20) vindt namelijke de Fab6 Conferentie in Nederland plaats, en komt het wereldwijde FabLab netwerk hier samen. Als Nederlandse FabLabs zijn we trots gastland te mogen zijn dit jaar. We beginnen het jaar meteen ook al met een primeur: tijdens de FabTafel drukken we het eerste FabYearBook.

Het FabYearBook 2010 is een verzameling verhalen en impressies uit het FabLab netwerk. Deze eerste editie bevat vooral bijdragen uit Nederland, maar we hopen hiermee een traditie te starten, en dat de tweede editie begin 2011 bijdragen van over de hele wereld bevat.

Tijdens de FabTafel drukken we het eerste exemplaar van dit eerste jaarboek. Daarna komt het jaarboek on-line beschikbaar zodat iedereen het zelf kan downloaden en afdrukken.

FabYearBook 2010

Op 16 december jl. tijdens de viering van het 15-jarig bestaan van Waag Society werd het eerste tijdelijke open source restaurant ter wereld geopend onder de naam Instructables Restaurant. Letterlijk alles wat je ziet, gebruikt en eet komt van de website instructables.com. Het is een experiment in “internet digestie”, het vermengen van de internet deel-cultuur met eet-concepten. Een team van enthousiaste mensen heeft hard gewerkt aan de totstandkoming van het het restaurant. Het meubilair werd ontwikkeld in Fablab Amsterdam. De eerste try-out was een groot succes!

Instructables.com is een online documentatieplatform en community van meer dan 500.000 mensen die instructies uitwisselen om de meest uiteenlopende dingen zelf te kunnen maken. Elke instructable volgt een vast patroon van zes stappen in woord en beeld om tot een resultaat te komen, en kan op bijna elk mogelijk terrein liggen. Instructables ondersteunt het gebruik van Creative Commons licenties.

Het Instrucatbles Restaurant komt met volledige instructies voor alles. In de meeste restaurants kan je een maaltijd kopen en er van genieten. In sommige restaurants, als je het meubilair leuk vindt, kan je het kopen. In het Instructables Restaurant ga je naar huis met de kennis over hoe je zowel het eten als het meubilair zelf kan maken.

Alle instructies, van de aankleding tot aan de recepten, komen van de input van anderen, die hun content onder een Creative Commons Licentie hebben gedeeld. Dit creëert een andere notie van eigenaarschap en intellectueel eigendom dan bij een reguliere onderneming. Het restaurant vertaalt de internet deel cultuur in een tastbare omgeving, waarmee het een ruimte creëert voor de oneindige informatie en de realiteit. Het is koppeling waar de virtuele en de fysieke wereld ontmoeten en communiceren.

Natuurlijk is het hele Restaurant ook op Instructables geplaatst, zodat iedereen zijn eigen Instrucatables Restaurant kan beginnen.

Afgelopen augustus vond de wereldwijde FabLab conferentie in Pune, India plaats. Volgend jaar augustus vindt de Fab6 conferentie in Nederland plaats. Dat is een geweldige kans om het hele FabLab netwerk kennis te laten maken met de unieke dichtheid van FabLabs hier, en in Nederland nog meer momentum te genereren voor het FabLab concept. Op die manier wordt de wereldwijde FabLab-gemeenschap versterkt.

De conferentie duurt een week en vergt uiteraard het nodige aan organisatie en voorbereiding. Die voorbereiding is nu al begonnen. We zoeken vrijwilligers om te helpen dit evenement neer te zetten. Voor nu zijn we vooral op zoek naar mensen die de hele organisatie willen helpen realiseren en coördineren. In een later stadium zijn we op zoek naar mensen die concrete taken op zich willen nemen.

January 2010 will see the release of the first FabYearBook ever. The FabYearBook won’t be a regular book of course, but a book consistent with the FabLab concept: every FabLab that wants to can contribute a part of the whole, and the resulting design file for the complete book will be distributed. Every FabLab then can print the FabYearBook in the way it sees fit, using the materials they have at hand. It is entirely imaginable that the FabYearBook will be a salon table glossy in the Netherlands, a wooden etching in Costa Rica, or a calendar in Afghanistan.

With the FabYearBook we want to highlight the diversity, inventivity and creativity of the worldwide FabLab network, and make our unity more tangible at the same time.

We invite all of you to contribute to the FabYearBook. Would you like to add a page (text, images, lasercut design, instructable etc.) or more to the FabYearBook? Let us know (ton@fablab.nl)! Contributions can be in English, Dutch or any other language (as long as you state in which language it is, and adding an English summary would be great!)

The date the FabYearBook will first be issued is January 27th, at the New Years Meetup of FabLab Netherlands. We will print the first hardcopy live at the event, and will send out the digital files to all contributors and FabLabs worldwide. The printing of the first hard copy will be streamed live on the FabLab video conferencing system, as well as on Qik/Youtube.

Expositie (Un)limited Design Contest 23-10-2009

Tijdens de Dutch Design Week zijn de beste ontwerpen uit de (Un)limited Design Contest te zien in het Gablab in Eindhoven.

Sci-fi zonnebrillen, een CNC gefreesd bord voor amuses, een badpak gemaakt uit één stuk stof – het zijn slechts een paar voorbeelden van wat er te zien is op de expositie van de (Un)limited Design Contest op de Dutch Design Week (DDW).

Amateurs, studenten en professionele designers hebben een groot aantal inzendingen gemaakt in de Nederlandse Fablabs en een deel daarvan kan van 19 tot 23 oktober worden bekeken in Eindhoven.

Feest en prijsuitreiking De winnaars van de contest zullen op vrijdag 23 oktober van 19.00 tot 22.00 uur worden bekendgemaakt tijdens een feestje in het Gablab met food design van Marije Vogelzang, een Bombay Sapphire cocktail bar, muziek van DJ Clyde en een speciaal optreden van een graffiti robot.

Maak ter plaatse je eigen ontwerp! Geïnspireerd geraakt door alle ontwerpen op de expositie? Bezoekers kunnen de ontwerpen gebruiken om ter plekke zelf hun eigen versies te maken, door gebruik te maken van de blueprints. Aangezien alle ontwerpen beschikbaar zijn gesteld onder een Creative Commons Licentie, ben je vrij om in het opgestelde Fablab een ontwerp uit te voeren en mee naar huis te nemen. En er is nog meer: partner Design|LAB houdt tijdens de expositie workshops, lezingen en performances.
