Impulse for innovation, local entrepreneurship and knowledge sharing

On 29 July 2011, the HONFablab in Yogyakarta, Indonesia will be inaugurated in the presence of the Mayor of Yogyakarta and Prince Wironegoro KPH.

Waag Society, institute for art, science & technology and the House of Natural Fiber (HONF), an Indonesian media-lab, see the opening as the incentive for the creation of many innovative projects in the region. HONFablab was funded by Agentschap NL – EVD Internationaal.

With this first FabLab in Southeast Asia, HONF and Waag Society hope to stimulate local entrepreneurs, students and creatives. The connection of Indonesia to the Fablab network, gives them access to innovative design and manufacturing methods. In addition, the HONFablab will enrich the network by sharing local knowledge and creativity.

Global impact

The impact of the HONFablab will become visible through projects in te field of incubation and care, from the manufacture of affordable, high quality prostheses with local materials to a “creative incubation program” which facilitates setting up businesses. After ‘Yogya’ hopefully more Fablabs will follow in Indonesia.

HONF

The House of Natural Fiber, Yogyakarta, is a New Media art laboratory since 1999 dealing with the principles of critical analysis and innovation. The house of natural fiber focuses on cultural development and New Media Art in the implementation of many New Media art projects and workshops that revolve around the interaction between people and their environment. As they work towards the development of art through technology.

De minister leerde over wat een FabLab is en ging zelf ook aan de slag door het nieuwe logo van het Amsterdam Living Lab te laseren en er een lamp van te maken.

Het werkbezoek van de minister was georganiseerd door de samenwerkende partijen in het project (AIM, UvA, Telematica Instituut en Waag Society). Die namen ook van de gelegenheid gebruik andere Living Lab initiatieven in het land te betrekken om tot meer samenwerking te komen. Peter Troxler gaf een presentatie over wat het FabLab is en daarna ging de minister in discussie met Neil Gershenfeld, die even bijschakelde vanuit Boston. Op de vraag hoe FabLab zou kunnen helpen bij de huidige economische crisis, antwoordde de laatste dat met de bottom up beweging van FabLabs, de innovatie goedkoper zal zijn, geografisch beter verdeeld en betere aansluiting zal hebben bij de behoeften.

Een Living Lab gaat over experimenteren en gezamenlijke creatie, waar gebruikers samen met onderzoekers, bedrijven en publieke instellingen op zoek gaan naar nieuwe oplossingen, nieuwe producten of diensten. Living Lab gaat ook over maatschappelijke betrokkenheid, duurzaamheid, innovatie die een sociaal draagvlak heeft, waarbij hogescholen, instellingen en grote ondernemingen samen aan een Open Innovatie-proces kunnen deelnemen waarvan de resultaten direct zichtbaar zijn voor alle betrokkenen. Op die manier worden gebruikers/burgers actieve producenten en niet alleen passieve consumenten.

De minister zei na afloop dat ze het begrepen had en verwachtte nog veel van het FabLab te horen! Zie daarvoor het interview:

FabLab Amsterdam zoekt een trainee:

From november 1, 2008, we are looking for a trainee for the fablab in Amsterdam for a period of 3 months. Are you a creative mind studying in the design field and always wanted to know more about digital fabrication? At Waag Societys Fablab, you can get your hands on and learn how to make (almost) anything with our digital production machines. As an example, have a look at our fab moments all done in our lab, using a laser cutter, a cnc milling machine or a vinyl cutter. We have 2 Dutch participants joining the How to make (almost) Anything! course at MIT’s FabLab with Neil Gershenfield. Follow Alex Schaub’s results here. And follow Nadya Peek’s results here. Alex is labmanager at FabLab Amsterdam; he’s following the course remotely via videoconferencing, a pilotrun of the FabAcademy. Nadya Peek is a former Mediamatic employee and was involved in the first Dutch pilot of FabLab Amsterdam at the El Hema Design Expo.

Gisteren is ook de Epilog LaserCutter geleverd, waarbij een uitgebreide instructie werd verzorgd.

Vandaag zijn ook de vinylcutter en de modula geleverd voor projecten bij Mediamatic. Kortom heelveel bedrijvigheid!

Waag Society en Stichting FabLab.nl zijn sinds 2006 bezig momentum te creëren om een (aantal) FabLabs naar Nederland te halen. Naar aanleiding van PICNIC is er een publiciteitsoffensief gestart, waar ook Mediamatic zich bij heeft aangesloten.

Gisteren is de start gemaakt met de introductie van FabLab in Amsterdam! Plotdesign heeft twee machines afgeleverd

en de eerste uitleg gegeven, onder de belangstelling van Mediamatic, RTCA, StudioSophisti en Waag Society.



Volgende week dinsdag is de volgende trainingsdag (voor de Modela) en komt ook de Epilog lasercutter.

Op Picnic ‘07 wordt voor het eerst in Nederland – onder toeziend oog van Neil Gershenfeld, die speciaal uit Amerika overkomt – een FabLab aan het grote publiek getoond. Op Picnic Jr worden er speciaal ontwikkelde workshops gegeven. Mediamatic richt in haar expositieruimte een FabLab in.
